Who is eligible for hospice care?
People with an illness causing limited life expectancy may receive hospice care. The patient’s clinical information must support a life expectancy of six months or less if no further aggressive treatment is provided. However, some patients may live longer than six months. Hospice care is appropriate as long as a review of the patient’s condition supports limited life expectancy.
Hospice care is designed for patients and families who have chosen to focus on symptom and pain management, not curative treatment. Hospice care does not mean less care, only that the focus shifts from curative to supportive.
Hospice is frequently associated with cancer, but there are many chronic illnesses and conditions in which a patient is considered to be terminal with a limited life expectancy. Patients who exhibit weight loss, functional decline, decreasing ability to eat or drink, frequent hospitalizations, chronic infections, worsening breathing problems, pain exacerbations, or a combination of various symptoms may qualify for hospice support.

Where is hospice care provided?
Care may be provided in a patient’s home, assisted living facility, or nursing home. Hospice may also be provided in a skilled facility or hospital for those patients requiring a high level of care that cannot be provided in the home setting.
